What Every Internet Marketer Needs to Know
Affiliate marketing: Sharing of revenue by online merchants and online sales members, referred to as affiliates. Compensation for affiliates comes from selling the merchant’s product or service, through their own marketing efforts, blogs, websites, etc. Affiliates receive a pre-determined percentage of each sale made.
Pay-Per-Click: Referred to as PPC, Pay-Per-Click is an advertising model used online, where advertisers pay, only when a prospect “clicks” on their online advertisement. Google is the dominant leader in the PPC industry.
Cost-Per-Click: Also known as CPC is the sum of money that an advertiser pays to an internet publisher or search engine, for each click on their ad that will drive a web visitor to the advertiser’s website.
Keywords: Words, sometimes phrases that target audiences or prospects use in their search queries in search engines.
Keyword Density: A percentage, that refers to how often a keyword is used in an article or on a website. The formula for determining keyword density is to determine the total word count on a page or in an article; then count how many times your keyword is used. Density is determined by multiplying the number of times the keyword is used, by 100, and then divide it by the total number of words. This gives you a percentage.
Search Engine Marketing: Also known as SEM, Search Engine Marketing is the practice of getting your website to appear in Search Engine results, through paid inclusion, organic search results, and PPC campaigns.
Organic Search: Sometimes called natural search results, these are the results returned by search engines that are non paid, using Search Engine Optimization techniques rather than paid advertising campaigns.
Search Engine Optimization: Also called SEO, this practice improves a website’s performance in search engine results, generally through improving a website’s structure, coding, and content. Websites are generally optimized to rank for specific keywords or keyword phrases.

Now that you have some of the mechanics, there’s more I want you to know about Internet Marketing. First and foremost, you must know your target audience. That sounds basic, but unfortunately, it’s often overlooked. Your message and your offer must appeal to the demographic you’re targeting or you’ll make exactly zero sales. Now is not the time to take a one-size-fits-all approach.
Let’s say that your product targets prospects that are defined as the “working class” demographic. What do you know about them? Did you know that they tend to spend impulsively, while having strong brand loyalty? They are huge consumers or self improvement and do-it-yourself information. This demographic is very likely to help with viral marketing campaigns, because they share their experiences and recommendations with others.
Is your niche targeting professional women? Did you know that professional women tend to be focused on personal development, giving back in a charitable or social sense, and keeping their vitality? They tend to have discretionary income they will part with if you appeal to their values.
Demographic information can be found on marketing forums, through professional associations, chambers of commerce, federal agency websites, and through paid research. I’ve found forums and social networks extremely helpful in sharing information. I also look to the competition. I find the most successful internet marketers, and see what they are doing.
That’s another must-know for internet marketers. What are the top marketers doing? There’s no need to reinvent the wheel. Find out what industry leaders are doing and apply it to your business. When industry leading internet marketers started to use video on their squeeze pages, the entire internet changed. Suddenly every marketer was using video to promote their products and services. Video became a staple of product launches. And one of the best parts about video is that, if well done, it goes viral, quickly. Search engines also love video. If you know something works, then do it.
One mistake I see new internet marketers make is they don’t stick with one strategy long enough to know what’s working, or not, and why their strategies are failing. I’m not suggesting you stay with a losing game plan. However, if you don’t have a method to measure your traffic, or your click through rate, you won’t know what needs to be changed. It might be your website copy, maybe your offer isn’t clear; maybe your offer doesn’t appeal to your target audience; or maybe visitors get to your site, see the price and hit the back button on their browser. Install Google Analytics on your website and find out how many visitors are coming to your site, from where, what pages they visit, how long they stay, the keywords that brought them to your website, and what offers are being clicked on.
I’m going to quickly share some of my thoughts on what NOT to do as an internet marketer,
Do not go so crazy with keywords and keyword phrases that your web copy makes no sense. Remember, your website copy needs to be written for people. Its people who hit the “buy” button, not search engines.
Do not forget to create trust with your audience. You cannot rush your sales pitch or overlook the importance of spelling out the benefits of your offer to your prospects. If they don’t trust you, they don’t buy from you.
Do not bad mouth the competition in forums, on blogs, or on your social networks.
Do not promote a product or service you wouldn’t use yourself.
Do not rush through the keyword research. This important research will shape your entire marketing campaign.
Do not forget to include a CALL to ACTION on your website. You must make it obvious what you want your web visitors to do.
Do not overlook the importance of researching an affiliate program before you begin promoting it. There are a lot of scams out there, and you do not want to promote a faulty product or service, or work with a company that does not pay you for your sales.
